We were lucky enough to have Jordan join us for a week of work experience at our Head Office in Geelong. Jord’s travelled over from Phillip Island to expand her knowledge in the fashion industry, and to see what we really get up to, here at The Lab. What made you choose The Lab as your place for work experience? I have always been interested in fashion and design and I chose The Lab because it was a great opportunity to try different aspects of the business. What have you liked about your time with us here? I have loved meeting new people and being part of a team. It was great to be in a work environment because it is very different to school. What areas were you looking forward to working in? I was excited about working in the creative part of the business. But I was looking forward to having a go at everything. What were you expecting coming into the business and did it meet your expectations? I didn’t have any expectations coming into the business. Have you worked in retail before or had any office experience? Yes, my mum has two clothing stores on Phillip Island called Sarsaparilla and Neon Circus and I usually work there every Sunday. She is a stockist of The Lab so I was familiar with the labels. This was my first time having any office experience. What areas of The Lab have you worked in so far? I worked in most areas of The Lab and got to meet all the staff. With Hannah, I did product development and I got to choose colours for a fabric print. With Marnie and the creative team I put together the up-coming Mothers Day hampers and in-store posters to send out to each of the retail stores, and Marnie showed me the backend of the online store. I learnt about quality control and did some fittings with Nerise and Kelly. Stacey and Merryn showed me through what they do in admin and Jamie and Steph showed me what goes on in the warehouse. What part have you liked the most and why? Working with the creative team was definitely the highlight of my experience and my favourite part was when Hannah showed me how she picks colours for fabric prints and I got to help her design a print. What have you learnt so far? I learnt about how much actually goes into the production of a garment and all the important processes along the way. We heard you went to one of our retail stores, did you enjoy your time there and how was it different to the retail stores you’ve worked in? I visited the Geelong retail store and it was a great experience! The staff were very welcoming and the store just had a really good feel about it. It was well merchandised and I loved the quirky and creative parts of the store. The change room curtains had sequins on them and the shop windows had half cartoon pictures on them which matched with the mannequins.
